And how it can affect you and your community
Hearing loss can be permanent or temporary. When the hearing loss is due to deterioration of the auditory nerve and components of the cochlear, it is called sensorineural hearing loss. When hearing loss is due to an obstruction such as wax or fluid in the middle ear, it is called conductive hearing loss.
Children with hearing loss have the barrier of struggling to develop spoken language as a result. This may be as simple as not being able to hear the beginnings and ends of words which impacts pronunciation and language development. Children with hearing loss often struggle to make friends, engage in group play and feel confident in new environments.
Noise induced hearing loss which often causes sensorineural hearing loss can be prevented by protecting your hearing when engaging in noisy activities such as loud work equipment or music. Conductive hearing loss can be prevented with hygiene practices and regular nose blowing.
